INSECURITY:
LINK ALL MOBILE PHONE NUMBERS TO BVN
To curb the rising wave of kidnapping and other forms of digital devices related insecurity in Nigeria, there is the urgent need to:
1. Link all mobile phone numbers to BVN of the user to facilitate easy tracing of calls.
2. Block all unregistered SIM cards immediately
3. Withdraw the licence of any mobile network operator with unregistered SIM cards in their database
People may start attacking government officials: staging sit-ins and blocking access to their homes, booing them when they ride into town etc in response to the current high level insecurity in Nigeria.
This may prompt the leaders to take more decisive action on security.
It beats my imagination that kidnappers are allowed free access to unregistered SIM cards in Nigeria. These criminal kidnappers make calls to negotiate ransom and these calls are not tracked and intercepted.
Indeed, the most clear sign of system failure is aptly depicted by the current blank cheque given to kidnappers by our communications officials to use unregistered SIM cards to negotiate for ransom after kidnapping innocent victims.
Our communications officials and security agents must work together using technology to stop the use of mobile phones in kidnapping and negotiation for ransom.
